Birthdays in Peru

Birthdays here are not what I'm used to and I learned that the hard way this month.
Kike's birthday was 14th February and I planned some surprised for him for that day. Little did I know that here birthdays start at midnight with eggs smashed over the head! First though there is the wind up. We were invited to Antonio and Martina's house for dinner except Kike was kind of 'uninvited' and as I had no idea what was going on (they forgot I didn't know the rules here) I insisted on him and Carlos coming only to find the table set for three. Kike left, hurt at being excluded which was the plan all along. We all got to Garabatos later and secreted a cake behind the bar, lured Kike there from Mama America and the waiter brought it just after midnight. After that he realised what had gone on and was very happy, the rest of his birthday was good for him :)

A week later and it was my birthday, I knew the little buggers were plotting something and was worried more about the custom of smashing eggs over the head but my birthday started in apparently true Peruvian fashion. I’d had a good birthday eve so far – Antonio took over my kitchen aided and abetted by his friend, Kike and Carlos and cooked a Chinese lunch for us all then Kike and I had a couple of hours practice – learned some new moves and perfected some old ones. Carlos had a date in the afternoon and Kike had one at 6pm.
Kike was supposed to come home from his date at 9pm and we were all going out as normal at 9.30pm. Carlos was fast asleep so I figured we'd wake him when Kike got home.
9pm came, then 10pm, then 11pm then the phone rang at 11.30pm - it was Kike at Gatabatos saying where are you? After a few choice words I hung up on him which woke Carlos and he tried to persuade me to go out just with him. I didn't feel so inclined and 15 minutes later Kike arrived home. They went into their room, I thought for Carlos to tear Kike off a strip, then I heard them go out so I went to bed.
12.05am they were knocking at my bedroom door with the cake they'd raced back to Garabatos to retrieve complete with candle and chocolates and a box of red wine. The little b****ds had set the whole thing up!! I did spoil their plans a little though by not going to Garabatos on my own.
They tell me I'm Peruvian now and have to celebrate Peru style - gits! I did eventually forgive them, probably at 8.45am this morning when they brought me breakfast in bed with yet another cake and they even put Camisa Negra on the cd player (my favourite and they hate it) Mind you I really shouldn’t drink red wine – oh my head!

So that's the explanation for why all the birthday photos so far are of us 3 on my bed with me in my PJs (the scruffy old ones too - if I'd known I'd have worn something more glamorous!) Still, probably the only chance I'll ever get of having two such gorgeous guys in my bed
God knows what's going to happen tonight, Antonio wasn't in on last nights escapade so I have him to watch out for now, he’s just been on the phone and I told him no more surprises

I got called into work and was met by a fantastic chocolate cake, card and prezzie :) Thanks to all at the South American Explorers Club xx

Got a rather more unwelcome prezzie later when Kike, Carlos and Michelle lured me onto the balcony and smashed eggs over my head!!! YUK!!

I’ll update this tomorrow after real birthday party tonight.

Photos are on the photo blog.
